The exhibit we visited was entitled "America I Am". This title and the exhibit depicted the hardships and triumphs of blacks in America. It showed how some African Americans were brought here on slave ships and how their race and culture progressed over the years. The title of the exhibit had many meanings that had a lot to do with the black community. The title overall was basically saying how blacks were apart of America even during a time of great prejudice and inequality which was common, mostly in southern states, African Americans wanted to be known and acknowledged for their contributions to the building of America as a nation. The exhibit had many artifacts that helped us understand and feel how our ancestors felt and what they went through and what they contributed to the world. There were also a number of quotes and books with information that spoke on the times that different men and women of color experienced. From Fredrick Douglas, James Brown, and Tupac the exhibit showed powerful black people fight for what they believed in no matter the penalty. In one room of the exhibit there was a playing slide show. The slide show tied in all the ends of the exhibit and explained the Title of the exhibit through pictures and videos of blacks in America.
Overall the exhibit accurately showed the progression of blacks as they found themselves in America. The exhibit showed every struggle and success for the African American people. The exhibit also showed one of the famous opposing forces the was strongly against the education and success of blacks the KKK. This was an important trip to attend because it is showing not only black history but American history as well. Our blog group is truly thankful for the chance to go to the National Geographic museum to learn such a important and historically accurate lesson.
